It’s Fashion Week again but if you ask me, who cares? Even if I could afford the clothes (and had somewhere super fancy to wear them), the largest sizes are single digits.
Fortunately, now there is Full Figured Fashion Week for all of us with curves, style, and a budget. The sixth annual event took place in New York in June of this year but just recently appeared in the New Yorker (with the unfortunate url “bigger-better”).

It’s not just the sizing and celebration of the female from that sets the event apart. Designers includes smaller operations Atlanta’s Elocin Plus as well as established brands like Kiyonna. At the show, there is a sense of community at the event, embodied by t-shirts exclaiming,”Thick Girls Do It Better“. It’s also just more fun, with wise cracking attendees and a moment with the lights to for everyone to turn to their neighbor and let them know, “girlfriend, you are beautiful”. Last but not least is the diversity. In addition to embracing the range of body types that exist, models and the audience feature women of color.
Sorry you missed it right? Well there’s always next year. Until then, check in with what’s happening across the pond at the British Plus Size Awards take place on November 22, 2014.
