Plus size is no longer the exception to the rule. Size 14 is the most common size for women, falling at the high end or usual clothing lines and the small end of plus size lines. According to the Center for Disease Control, 69% of adults over 20 are overweight. Assuming about half of those people are women, more people are double digit sizes than are not.
In addition to more and more fashion lines featuring extended sizes, the collections are not always separate anymore. Clothing lines by Melissa McCarthy, Kelly Osbourne, and Nicolette Mason for ModCloth range from 0-24 and XS-4X.
Many women agree that the terminology plus size is insulting and that clothes are clothes, no separate sections of the store are necessary.
We totally agree.
However, things get trickier online. I’m sure we’ve all Googled things we would never say out loud. Until plus size is eliminated as a concept, it is still the terminology people use to look for clothing in their size.
So, for the record, we look forward to the end of plus size sections but until then we’ll use it to help you find what you’re looking for. Any feedback is welcome!
